About Proof Cards
A proof card is an one-of-a-kind original card used to test color,
overall appearance, etc., before the card is then used to produce the manufactured retail version we see in trading
card packs and boxes.
There are various proofs such as single and multi-color proofs, color or black and white negatives. Many proofs
have no printing on the back (called blanks) and sometimes no text print on the front.
The rarest proofs are "unissued." These are proof cards that did not make the final run of a trading
card series. These tend to be the most desired by collectors.
Topps Wacky Packages Series for example calls these "Lost Wacky's"
The only challenge is that proof cards are not mass produced, and were not intended to be available for sale.
Today's trading cards will have their own original proof. This is common with printing anything in quantity; you
have a final proof before printing the actual product.
As for the new released proofs of modern day cards, they may not have the value compared to their vintage counterparts.
What makes the card potentially valuable is not that it's just a proof card, but what kind of proof card. It could
be a famous sports figure, popular TV show, major blockbuster movie, or a card series that already has high demand,
and low supply making an original proof card, more sought after.
Topps began offering their original proof cards directly from their vault, probably to make money. The cards were
just sitting for decades in some cases, not brining the company any money. So, open the vault, and up for sale
many have gone.
Once the proofs are gone, they are gone. Topps can't make duplicates of a proof card when the original proof is
gone.
It is suggested to never buy a proof card without an original certificate of authenticity (COA) that came from
the original proof manufacturer and is available with the specific proof card.
All of the proof cards we have were purchased directly from the original manufacturer - Topps, Inc. and all came
from their famous vault archive.
Each proof comes in a hard plastic sealed case with a Topps seal and original Topps COA.
